International Secretarait visits The City of Jamshedpur

In July, 2009, Ms Caroline Bayliss and Ms Stephanie McCarthy visited the member city, Jamshedpur, India.
After three years of being in close communication with the Local Secretariat, it was a wonderful opportunity to meet the team at Jamshedpur Utilities Services Company Limited (JUSCO), an enterprise of Tata Enterprise. JUSCO has successfully implemented reticulated water to 1000’s of residents in more than 60 Bagan areas. The high quality standard of water is higher than World Health Organization standards. JUSCO bases their work ethic largely on Kaizen, a Japanese philosophy based on continuous improvement. This philosophy is an evident characteristic when visiting the river-to-river water treatment plant and observing the well developed processes in place that are making the most and placing a high value on water as a valuable resource. Their work, as JUSCO best describes, as a legacy of a century of Trust, based on the Tata values of integrity, excellence, trusteeship, respect for individual, credibility and agility.
JUSCO initiatives within the Basti Water project include rain water harvesting projects, community owned infrastructure projects and community education initiatives. These activities have helped communities enormously by providing a continual water supply, improving the cropping / agricultural base from 3 months to 6-9 months and dramatically decreasing the number of waterborne diseases and related health issues.
